A year ago, Sefora was a typical teenager who went to school, hung out with her friends and was looking forward to becoming a young adult with all the opportunities that life can bring. But that all changed when her parents asked her to enter into an informal union with a boy from her village.
“I don’t know what went through my head. My parents were never home, and we had no food so agreeing to a union was way of having a roof and food,” explains Sefora. “For my parents, it was important to be in a union. I was asked if I agreed, and I said yes.”
With little understanding of what she was agreeing to, Sefora quickly discovered that her whole life had changed. “Life as a married woman is different and more difficult than I imagined. I’m not the same because you can’t do what you want anymore.”
